Carpet underlay is also referred to as carpet padding, carpet pad, or carpet cushion.
How to pick pad
Pad is priced on material and it’s density and carpet warranties are often provisional on the pad you install under your new carpet. If you wish to save money cutting on the quality of your pad is not the recommended place to do it.
What is Carpet Padding for?
The primary reason to select an appropriate underlay is to protect the carpet from premature wear. Underlay acts as a sort of shock absorber, absorbing foot traffic. Without a good pad the weight of your foot can push the carpet backing into the hard surface below and cause wear and loosening of your fibres and can appear as shedding or matting.
A good pad will prolong your carpet’s life and in the long run, saving you money!
Carpet pad can save you money on heating
Carpet underlay will act as sound insulation to cut down on the clunking feet overhead and the voices and music from downstairs.
Durable underlay comes in a variety and high density pad can be very thin so carpet pad does not need to be thick to be good.
And it just feels god to your feet.

Urethane and Bonded carpet underlay
Sometimes referred to as chip foam pad, it is a recycled product bonded to form a carpet underlay. Proven to be very enduring, available is almost every thickness and density and recognizable by it multicolored components.
Its durability and application is measured by its density in pounds per cubic foot and most carpet warranties recommend a minimum density of around 5lbs. Some higher end carpet manufactures recommend a minimum of 8lbs.
Rubber Underlay
Excellent and relatively expensive, it will help your new carpet last longer and possibly even out last it so you may not need to replace it when you do put in a new carpet.
Under floor heating
Requires a specific type of underlay designed to allow the heat to radiate. The resistance to heat flow is measured in “togs*” and the lower the value the better for under floor heating purposes. Tog values less than 1 are recommended to compliment under floor heating systems.
